Asian cultures always seem to impress me, especially if it has something to do with creativity and art. One incredible feat of beauty is Chinese Paper Cutting, or Jianzhi. Ever since Cai Lun invented paper in the Eastern Han Dynasty of China, these works of art were used to decorate royal palaces. Since they are used to decorate doors and windows, they are often refered to as "chuāng huā", or Window Flowers.
Well the eyes are the windows to the soul, right? So what better way to decorate your "windows" than with paper eyelashes. Beautiful tiny works of art can adorn your peepers thanks to Paperself. I recently came across this magical idea when visiting Style Bubble and seeing Susie's post on them a few days ago, so I tracked down the brains behind the brillance to find out more. They completely remind me of something I might have attempted as a child. Cutting snowflakes from scrap paper to adorn my room, or people in triangle dresses holding hands across the windows at school. It brings a sense of magic and nostalgia to an otherwise basic element in nature.
After tracking down the site, I sent out an email to find out more about what/who inspired this idea. I found out who was behind it and why it came about. Chunwei Liao founded Paperself in 2009 after being raised in the cardboard package industry. As a designer, he wanted to use his knowledge and understanding to put his ideas into work thinking of alternate and rad ways use paper. Now a team of engineers and manufactuers work together to make all kinds of cool stuff like paper furniture and lamps!
Fashion designer TingYu Wang developed the eyelashes inspired by the amazing Chinese Tradition and meshed the two to create truly unique idea. Not only are these little beauties just plain amazing, they also hold meaning within their designs.
Rock the horses at your next job interview for "big sucess".
Adorn yourself with peonies on the big day for "all the happiness in the world".
Entice a new lover with the peach blossoms to "bring the romantic encounter". Perfect for that first, errr third date!
Find your own whimsy in the UK based boutiques they sell in Lost in Beauty and shop Luna and Curious, or down under at Elevate Design
Now get out there and start batting those fabulous lashes!
XOXO Shlee
